Explaining the vocabulary you will need to understand the conflict


The Holocaust: the killing of millions of Jews and others by the Nazis before and during the Second World War.
Zionism: an international movement originally for the establishment of a Jewish national or religious community in Palestine and later for the support of modern Israel.

Antisemitism: hostility or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic or racial group.
Arab Nationalism: a nationalist ideology that asserts the Arabs are a nation and promotes the unity of Arab people, celebrating the glories of Arab civilization, the language and literature of the Arabs, calling for rejuvenation and political union of the Arab world.
IDF: Israel Defence Forces, armed forces of Israel, compromising the Israeli army, navy, and air force.

Apartheid: refers to a political system where people are clearly divided based on race, gender, class or other such factors – you’ve probably heard of the apartheid in South Africa where Black people were separated from the White.
Mandate: the authority given to an elected group of people, such as a government, to perform an action to govern a country.
